Itachi, You are incorrect, You do NOT need to update. if you have the Homebrew Channel, You can use gecko OS as a channel or from hbc loader to load wii games form v3.2 if you want

I haven't updated since 3.2; I've been manually installing all the IOS I need that are from the updates.. Also, the reason this update is so unstable is that they updated the boot2 in an attempt to get rid of bootmii, however, if the system powers off or stops at all during the update your wii is bricked. A dumb move on Nintendo's part, in my opinion. And, ironically, if you even successfully made it to 4.2, there was a new Bootmii installer like 1 day after that was compatible with System Menu 4.2. So, fail on Nintendo's part; they caused more trouble than they solved anything.

And, for the record, I have the backup launcher, cIOSCORP, a Wii USb Hard Drive with 200GB, WAD Installers, and the like all installed, among some custom VC injections, forwarder channels, and emulators.
