Nintendo Direct Pre E3 2012

Summary:<hr />

  • Goal of presentation: "Presenting the Wii U in a more conceptual sense"

    - Families paying attention to their devices more than the people in the same room, American Professor coined the term "Alone together" to describe the phenomenon.

    - Iwata states: "A challenge set for ourselves creating something that will unite people rather than dividing them."


  • Wii U controller:

    - Official name: "Wii U Gamepad" named after the 1980's home console famicom controller

    - New controller design:


    - Pressing down on the Joystick acts as another button:


    - Converting the Wii U controller into a universal TV remote:



    - Touch screen from Wii U controller screen reflect change on TV screen:



    - Gyro Sensors for motion control

    -NFC Reader/writer for card to game interaction:


    - Transfer of game from television to Game controller

    - Wii U Pro controller:



  • "Miiverse"

    - Developers called it the "Mii Wara wara." (Japanese onomatopoeia for general noise of a crowd.)

    - described as a place where Miis around the world meet and connect. Essentially the home interface of the Wii U:




    - Network communication system that is native to Wii U but also can be displayed through the Wii U gamepad:


    - First thing to be displayed on the screen when it is first turned on.

    - Can be accessed during gameplay without pause.

    - Allows for communication between players around the World.

    - Voice/video communication between players. Wii U controller used as the camera/mic:


    - Social feed that can be accessed from anywhere with different devices:


    - Miis can transmit game content they have created themselves to other players.

It's agreed. We're all getting rid of Skype and buying Wii U's!

Aye, that's pretty much what it comes down to, Talent. And to make it better, it would be limited only to those who have a WiiU. Or, would that make it worse...? Meh, difference of opinion. I think it's both good and bad to have video chat, though it is an innovative idea.

Pretty much everything has video/audio capabilities these days, it's just that it is more convenient to be able to use both within one console at the same time. Granted the Wii U even allows us to run the chat and the game at the same time.
