The second one is miles ahead of the first. I HATED the first left 4 dead because it was so incredibly one dimensional.
They fixed and improved so much, including having more than 6 types of god damned guns in the whole game (which wasn't long at all AT ALL)
and they made much more items. You get bile bombs to throw and distract zombies or even get them to attack tanks, you get defibs to revive a teammate, adrenaline to make you faster at nearly everything you do for a while, and new special ammunition which can be explosive or incendiary. Not to mention the melee weapons.
The game was nothing without melee weapons (Chainsaw anyone?)
And there are more than the 5 types of special infected they had last time. Now there are chargers, spitters, jockeys. And as my friends pointed out, every single NPC seems smarter this time around. Computer teammates will be a lot more strategic rather than "Protect the dying teammate but don't help him up before he dies." And special infected will try a lot harder to screw you up by dragging you into hazards, and even creating hazards to drag you into with the spitter.
They increased the campaign lifespan a lot, and all the levels so far have been interesting (fairground anyone?). I'd play this game over the first one any day. Ever.
