My Latest Mission: Other M
- Spoiler:
- My name is Samus Aran. Two days ago I recieved a distress signal. Code name: Baby's Cry. While there I met my old squadron from my days in the Galactic Federation. For the sake of the others, I decided to join them. My former comanding officer then gave me a mission: to investigate the Bottle Ship, anhillate any possible threats to survivors and ensure the Bottle Ship's destruction.
SCROLL PAST THE SPOILER FOR MY REVIEW!
MASSSIVE HUGE GIGANTIC IMENSE ENORMOUS SPOILER ALERT! QUICKLY! AVERT YOUR EYES!!!!
My and my former squadron discovered that this enormous vessel was being used to propogate possible bioweapons... including one of the galaxy's largest threats: Metroids. The DNA of metroids, ridley, and worst of all, mother brain, were recovered from my suit. On the bottle ship, I encountered all of them. The closest man I had to a father sacrificed himself to eliminate the metroids by disconecting the secret area they were being raised in, sector zero, from the Bottle Ship, causing sector zero to self-destruct, eliminating all metroids from the Bottle Ship and the galaxy. I later encountered Anthony Higgs, my closest friend. We battled my former nemises, Ridley. Anthony sacrificed himself to save my life. With his help I was able to destroy the Ridley clone. I also encountered Mother Brain, though she was not in the form you would expect. She was an android who was given the name Melissa Burgman. Her artificial intelegence was that of Mother Brain. One day, when the personel on the ship captured her in an atempt to change her programing, she became enraged and killed all 4 officers that were capturing her. Also, with Mother Brain's artifical intelegence, she was able to command all life forms on the ship to revolt. There was but one survivor. Madeliene Burgman, the woman who send the distress signal that brough myself, and the Galactic Federation to the bottle ship. When I found Madeliene she was frightened and wouldn't let me near her. She triggered an alarm that opened two large doors. Curious, I went inside. I couldn't beleive what i saw. Metroid eggs. Several of them. Then, from nowhere, it came. The resurrected Queen Metroid. The fight was long and brutal and I was at the brink of death, but i succeded. I also convinced Madeline i was there to help her. Together we set out to escape the bottle ship but were stopped by Melissa. She treatened to kill us both, and when more Galactic Federation personel came, she comanded vicious beasts, some of the deadliest I'd ever seen, to kill us. With my help the Galactic Federation succeded in killing the beasts. They also killed Melissa. Madeliene ran to her side, crying. I tried to calm her but the Comanding Officer of the newly arived squadron told me that without the people I came to the Bottle Ship with, I was an outsider... Then an unexpected turn of events, I heared the word "Princess." There was only one man who called me Princess. Then, from nowhere, Anthony Higgs came. I struggled to supress my joy of seeing him once again. Because of him, I was able to take Madeline onto my ship. We left the Bottle Ship, exhausted. Emotions swirled around in my head. I'd lost everyone I'd ever cared for, Anthony excluded.
I later returned for the Bottle Ship, just before it's destruction, for something that could never be replaced: The helmet of my former Commanding Officer and the closest thing I had to a Father. I cried as i hugged it to my chest. The moment was spoiled by an alarm followed by the message: "Bottle Ship will self-destruct in 5 minutes. Evacuate immediatly"
I escaped the Bottle Ship with seconds to spare, barley dodging death.
END OF SPOILER! END OF SPOILER! END OF SPOILER! END OF SPOILER!
Other M was an incredible game. It combined the action found in the others in the Metroid series with emotion that had not been previously seen. I completed my mission at 3:55 AM September 11th, 2010. I was on the verge of tears by the end. The way everything at the beginning that seems completely unrelated all ties together at the end so perfectly. This game was perfect. The story was perfect, the controls were perfect (i had some scepticism at first), the way the emotions came through was perfect. The list goes on. I would definatley recomend this game. I beat the game a second time today. It was that good. F***ING BUY IT!
have a nice day

Yeah, i have beaten it a coupla times myself, however I did not find it as engaging as Retro's iterations.
The game takes place just after the events of Super Metroid. Never played it? Not a problem; the game has a bit of backstory expressed in cinematics. The story is this: Samus, after being saved by the baby metroid from Mother Brain, feels kinda' sad about how the baby sacrificed itself for her. In a fit of illogical decision making, she decides to check out a distress call ID'd as a Baby's Cry. This, of course, means that the baby is still alive (at least to Samus) and she heads off to the location, which is inconveniently in some lone corner of the galaxy. Once there, she finds The Bottle Ship, which is a derelict. Upon investigation she quickly discovers that the Galactic federation is also hot on the Bottle Ship's mysteries. The unit of the GF is the very same one that she used to be enrolled in back in her army-rebel-teenage days, the commander of which players a father figure to her.
And so they go on crazy adventures together to figure out what happened. Death ensues, monsters are everywhere, and Samus becomes a a badass melee fighter. Yay!
While it did seem to take Metroid back to its roots while retaining a modern flavor, the controls were VERY close to being cumbersome. Luckily there was just the right amount of pacing and gameplay mechanics to make the novel control scheme work. But just barely. It is the kind of game where you are peeved at the schematics when all of a sudden they work beautifully and all doubt is momentarily lost.
Besides the questionable controls, there were some plot elements that would make a hard-core Metroid fan, such as myself, cringe. Nothing game-breaking, though, only Samus breaking. The game played rather linearly for the most part, which is a great innovation for a Metroid game, and the difficulty level felt right for the most part. Another qualm i had was the lack of items, where you had to rely on moments of inaction to recharge your unlimited missiles, but could only really gain health when you were at the point of almost being dead, the recover method being almost entirely useless for these instances as if something was killing you, you wouldn't have the time to stand around and recharge.
All in all, the cinematics were well done and the voice acting, while out of place, added to the experience. If you are looking for a game that details Samus' past (because you never read the written version released like 2 decades ago), this is the game for you. However, I will be doing my annual run of the Prime series as usual.
I give it a 7/10
